Stop comparing yourself to when you were 17

Whether you were 17 years old 10 years ago or 30 years ago, we need to have a little chat.

Have you ever caught yourself thinking or saying, "I remember being size X at 17", "I didn't have to worry about my metabolism when I was 17", "I was running 7 minute miles at 17", or "I was deadlifting X lbs at 17". It's usually mentioned with a regretful inflection as if 17 year-old you was when you were in your prime.

First of all, why do you feel like this was your prime? Do you miss having a curfew, driving a beat up ol' car to and from school, and not having your own money? By all means, no judgment if you miss those days, but I want you to realllllly think about the circumstances you were under at age 17.

Then I want you to think about your current circumstances. Maybe you have a spouse or kids and a dog who rely on you for support of some kind (emotional, financial, etc.). Maybe you have a home, which requires regular upkeep. Maybe you have a job where you have employees or a supervisor who rely on you. Maybe you have friends and loved ones who rely and appreciate your support for hugs, laughs, and a listening ear. The truth is, you have some form of these responsibilities in your life. You have skin in the game nowadays. This is a significantly higher amount of responsibility than when you were 17. You cannot compare yourself to when you were 17. You are a completely different person inside and out. And for the better!

It's time to stop comparing yourself to when you were 17. If you're going to compare yourself to a past version of yourself, compare yourself to who you were yesterday.

How can you be 1% better today than how you were yesterday?

What choices can you make today that will make you stronger, faster, and healthier tomorrow and in the future?

Meet yourself where you are today. Not where you were eons ago.

Start chipping away at the best, strongest, fastest, and healthiest version of yourself. How cool would it be to feel that way at ages 30, 50, 70, and beyond? Pretty dang neat, if you ask me.
