My top 4 trails near Denver

As the snow starts to melt and the mud goes away, we're starting to get the itch to get back to the trails (if you haven't already!). In preparation for the 2023 trail season, here are four of my go-to trail areas near Denver.

1. Mt Falcon Park

Mt Falcon Park has multiple trails to choose from that interconnect and lead to various mileage and elevation gain. They have two entrances: one on the Morrison side and one of the Indian Hills side. I started many of my Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim training runs on the Morrison side. Turkey Trot Trail is all too personal to me at this point haha. Mt Falcon is dog friendly and has trails for mountain bikers, as well.

2. Deer Creek Canyon Park

Deer Creek is known for it's bike-ability on the road, but it also has some dirt trails tucked away. This is a great accessible trail for those on the south side of Denver. Deer Creek has multiple trails that interconnect and wind around. Aside from the first .75 ish miles of the trail, it's fairly tree covered, which makes it pleasant in the hot season. Deer Creek is dog friendly and has trails for mountain bikers, too.

3. Mt Morrison

Mt Morrison is a beast of it's own. It's known as a nearby 14er prep trail considering its quick and steep ascent. If you're planning on tackling any hikes that require rapid gain in elevation, this will be a helpful trail for your adventures. Mt Morrison is dog friendly, although I do recommend making sure your dog is also prepared for a steep incline and steep descent. Bring lots of water for your pup and avoid going during hot hot days as the trail is completely exposed.

4. Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Although slightly further away from Denver, Golden Gate Canyon State Park never disappoints. This one is a must-do in the fall due to the abundant aspen trees, but beautiful all year round. The state park has multiple trails to choose from and you can't go wrong with any of them! Please be sure to purchase a state park sticker either at one of the kiosks or with your car registration (new as of 2023!). Golden Gate Canyon State Park is dog friendly and mountain bike friendly.

Each one of these trails are well worth the trip, especially being so close to Denver. Let's get out there and enjoy the trails this season!
